Three Wishes is a 1995 American drama-fantasy film directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Patrick Swayze, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Joseph Mazzello.

Plot
On present day, a family man driving on his car with his wife and two daughters almost runs into a man. The vision of the man flashes the husband, remembering his childhood.
In 1955, Jane Holman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is driving her natal Californian town with her two sons, 11-year old Tom (Joseph Mazzello) and 5-year old Gunny (Seth Mumy) when she accidentally runs into a drifter named Jack McCloud (Patrick Swayze), who breaks his leg. Feeling sorry for him, Jane invites Jack and his female dog Betty Jane to stay at her home until his leg has healed. After having some difficulties in adapting to this new lifestyle, Jack soon finds himself loved by the family and they all want him to stay. When he starts teaching baseball to Tom, who misses his father who went missing in action during the Korean War, the two of them develop a strong bond. Meanwhile, Gunny believes that there is more to Jack and Betty Jane than meets the eye, and he is determined to find out what.
Gunny soon finds out Betty Jane is a genie, not merely a dog. Meanwhile Jack's bond with the family gets closer and closer, and Tom feels Jack as the father he lost in the war. At the same time, Jane's neighbor Phil (David Marshall Grant) recognizes Jack as a former famous baseball player, disappeared years ago during Second World War, but Jack denies it to rejection of Phil, who see Jack as a rival by the affections of Jane. Eventually Tom too rejects Jack by the decision of him to move away after to be heal, feeling himself as abandoned by a father by second time, at the same time that Jane feels sad in the impossibility to stay with Jack, despite the mutual feelings between both. After Jack says goodbye to Tom, Tom flees in his bike to a near hill, changing of decision and riding to the highway following Jack, finding him making hitch-hiking and seeing him get up to a truck to get away before Tom reaches him. On the 4th of July Party, Gunny realizes his wish to fly in the middle of the fireworks, not being saw by the public congregated in the park, and Tom's wish fulfills when his lost long-time father is discovered alive and he has back to home, after to be free by the People's Republic of China where he was imprisoned.
Back to present day, driver reveals to be an adult Tom, who get out the car to enter in the cemetery close to the place where almost runs the man. Tom meets Jack again, talking briefly with him to discover that the Jack's real wish wasn't that Tom's father back to home, but that Tom was happy with his family he had. After Jack disappears when Tom wasn't seeing him, a renewed Tom moves away to hold his wife, meanwhile camera focuses a tomb, with its headstone revealing that in fact Jack McCloud died on August 6, 1944, in the Normandy landings.

Three Wishes was poorly received by critics, as the film holds a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
