History
For over seven decades, Buddy's Pizza has been serving up the original Detroit-style square pizza to patrons across metro Detroit and earning accolades from fans across the nation. Originally a blind pig, the restaurant located on the corner of Six Mile and Conant in Detroit was transformed into a legitimate tavern and became the birthplace of Sicilian-style square, or Detroit-style, pizza in 1946.
Buddy's Pizza thrives on traditional flavors and recipes with an innovative list of menu items serving the needs and tastes of today's diner. This legacy began when Gus Guerra and Concietta "Connie" Piccinato placed the first Detroit-style square pizza into the ovens at Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria in 1946. Since Connie baked the first crispy-crusted Sicilian-style pizza - the first known square pizza in the U.S. - the restaurant has expanded to include 12 locations across Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne counties with a menu that remains true to its Detroit roots - and it starts with the pizza pans.
Originally used to hold nuts and bolts at local manufacturing plants, the square, blue steel utility pans Buddy's Pizza uses today are the perfect shape, size and thickness for baking pizza with a deliciously crunchy crust. Detroit-style pizza is easily recognizable by its iconic square shape and crunchy, cheesy corner slices. Relying on only the freshest of ingredients, Buddy's Pizza is a work of art that starts with double proofed dough creating the perfect canvas for meats, topped with a layer of brick cheese and signature strips of tomato sauce.
Year after year, Buddy's Pizza is consistently voted Detroit's number one square pizza for its quality flavor and creative menu, including gluten-free, multi-grain and vegan options.
